In Durham, I feel surrounded by green and the hum and buzz of students; in the City, I feel surrounded by culture. I like to think it was meant to be that way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">I was born in New York, in Bensonhurst, an Italian American neighborhood that became notorious in 1989 when Yusef Hawkins, a young black man, was attacked and shot while walking through the area. As a student at NYU and then Columbia University, I moved via education to becoming a professor in the upper middle class: a story of growth and change I tell in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><em>Crossing Ocean Parkway<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">. Like pizza and bagels, my New York marriage brought together my Italian roots with my husband\u2019s Jewish American ancestry. We have two daughters, who, like us, are open to all religious traditions. I meditate daily as a spiritual practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">I write, a lot, with great devotion, about books, family, food, and culture. I\u2019ve published two acclaimed accounts of our fascination with primitive cultures: everything from Tarzan to Georgia O\u2019Keeffe and body piercing. I plan a third book to complete a trilogy on the subject that\u2019s called, right now, \u201cModern Primitives Today.\u201d I also love the intimacy and sharing of memoir, a genre I see as motivated by the experience of death but ultimately affirming of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><br \/>\nI love to travel \u2013 don\u2019t most of us? Seeing new places &#8212; Mexico, Israel, Japan, Turkey, Kuwait \u2013 punctuates repeat stays in places of the heart where I\u2019ve been lucky enough to live for extended periods: France, especially its rural areas, London, London, London, New Mexico, and Italy,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">especially Venice, a city I did not like as a casual tourist but have grown to love after teaching there two summers, the last time getting to watch\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">boats pass nearby on the Grand Canal near the Accademia Bridge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-235 alignleft\" title=\"IMG_0121\" src=\"http:\/\/dev.jackmakesthings.com\/tor\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_0121-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/dev.jackmakesthings.com\/tor\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_0121-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/dev.jackmakesthings.com\/tor\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_0121-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/dev.jackmakesthings.com\/tor\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_0121-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">My latest book, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><em>Picnic in the Dark<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">, celebrates the legacy of books, food, and family and includes Italian American recipes that come from my mother \u2013 recipes every cook should have!. The title says a lot for me: we don\u2019t always know where we\u2019re going, and getting there isn\u2019t always neat or even pretty.
