{"id":195,"date":"2012-04-25T05:41:06","date_gmt":"2012-04-25T05:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mariannatorgovnick.com\/?p=195"},"modified":"2012-04-25T05:41:06","modified_gmt":"2012-04-25T05:41:06","slug":"species-thoughts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dev.jackmakesthings.com\/tor\/species-thoughts\/","title":{"rendered":"Species Thoughts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Peter Jackson\u2019s KING KONG opened in 2005, I realized that I was a thrill seeker at the movies and, in fact, always had been. \u00a0Epics from GONE WITH THE WIND to LAWRENCE OF ARABIA to GANDHI thrilled my soul. \u00a0I saw some of these epics on tv by necessity \u2014 they were before my time \u2014 but epic is always BIG and even better on the wide screen. KING KONG was a thrill maker, an adventurers\u2019 adventure. \u00a0I\u2019d forgotten the dinosaurs (there in the 1933 original). \u00a0And Adrian Brody isn\u2019t much of a hero. \u00a0But what this version of the movie got right was species thinking. \u00a0Thinking between species. \u00a0Or, of that\u2019s too much, the kinds of feelings between species that any pet owner knows exists. \u00a0Or any fans of KING KONG. \u00a0The 2005 Ann loves King Kong and sees (as 1933\u2019s Fay Wray did not) that he wants to protect her and, like her, loves beauty. He wants to take her far away from the 1930s crowd, always vulgar in the film. I\u2019m thinking about KONG because I am teaching it this week.
